Imagine an elementary curriculum that teaches science and literacy at the same time—and increases student learning in both.
That’s exactly what Seeds of Science/Roots of Reading offers: an innovative, research-based approach to full curricular integration. A combination of firsthand and secondhand investigations are used to teach students valuable skills that include making observations, conducting experiments, searching for evidence, and making sense of data on their own and through conversations with peers.
Seeds of Science/Roots of Reading is being developed under a grant from the National Science Foundation. The program was created by a partnership of both science and literacy educators. The science team is led by Jacqueline Barber from the Lawrence Hall of Science. The literacy team is lead by P. David Pearson and Gina Cervetti from the Graduate School of Education. Both are part of the University of California at Berkeley.
