Do things really get smaller as they get farther away? Can you be sure?
This unit provides students with active, hands-on experience exploring
links between data from measurements, geometric patterns and algebraic
formulas. Students build an understanding of the formulas XY=K
(inverse variation) and X/Y=K (direct variation) through mathematical
models created from real situations.
The five Investigations units from EQUALS give middle
school teachers and students opportunities to explore
mathematics skills and concepts in familiar contexts that make
sense. These 4-8 week integrated units encourage sustained
work that involves students in high-level thinking, creative
problem solving, planning their own approaches, and
communicating their own ideas. They work together to explore
problem-based curriculum with more depth than traditional
exercises.
Student worksheets are in English and Spanish.
