EQUALS Investigations:<BR>Growth Patterns

How do things grow? How can growth be described and predicted? Students explore the mathematical answers to these two questions by building models and investigating real-world phenomena. The unit presents and contrasts the two simplest discrete models of growth: repeated addition and repeated multiplication.

The five Investigations units from EQUALS give middle school teachers and students opportunities to explore mathematics skills and concepts in familiar contexts that make sense. These 4-8 week integrated units encourage sustained work that involves students in high-level thinking, creative problem solving, planning their own approaches, and communicating their own ideas. They work together to explore problem-based curriculum with more depth than traditional exercises. Student worksheets are in English and Spanish.
