This guide features a selection of highly involving life science activities, conveying key environmental concepts and beautifully illustrating the interactive nature of living ecosystems. Student groups set up and observe living models of a pond in the classroom. Accessible plants and organisms used include Elodea, Tubifex worms, and mosquito fish. An optional culminating activity is a field trip to a nearby pond or stream. This unit is an excellent complement to the GEMS unit Schoolyard Ecology.
